Fading gospel musician Noel Zembe was on Tuesday afternoon was severely beaten up for allegedly snatching another man’s wife.
Zembe was bashed in full view of many people, including his child, at Gazaland Shopping Centre in Highfield where he had gone to repair his commuter omnibus seats. “Yes. I had to beat him up because he was having an affair with my wife,” said Ndoro. He said the two had been seeing each other for a long time — until he smelt a rat.
Ndoro — better known as Usher at Gazaland Shopping Centre where he trades in scrap metal — also claimed that Zembe took advantage of his musical influence to lure his wife. “He (Zembe) was using his backing vocalist Tinotenda to broker the deal between him and my wife. I saw a text message on my wife’s phone sent by Tinotenda, telling my wife that Zembe wanted to meet her at their usual place.
“When I questioned my wife about the text message, she remained mute, until I threatened to take her to Zembe for further inquiries,” he said. H-Metro failed to get a comment from Sandra as her mobile phone is now with Usher following the incident on Tuesday.
People close to Sandra yesterday said she had fled her matrimonial home after receiving a thorough hiding at the hands of an angry husband. “She was also beaten yesterday and we believe she is now staying with her family,” said one woman who preferred anonymity.
But Zembe denied the allegations. The soft-spoken musician said he was not having an affair with Sandra. “To be honest, I was not in love with Sandra. We had a working relationship,” he said. Zembe said he was surprised to receive a phone call from Usher, asking where he was by the time he came to attack him. The former Frontline Kids member said he openly told Usher that he was at Gazaland where he had gone to repair his kombi.
“I honestly told him where exactly I was, without suspecting anything. I was surprised to see him pouncing on me in the company of three other men. “He never gave me any chance to explain or give my side of the story,” said the devastated Zembe. Yesterday Usher revealed to H-Metro that he was baying for another chunk of Zembe’s flesh.
He said he threatened to beat the hell out of Zembe if they happen to meet again. “He called me in a bid to convince me that he was not having an affair with my wife. “I told him that he was asking for another whipping.
“The second time Zembe called, he used a woman to try and convince me. Unfortunately, I will never buy any of his tricks,” said Usher. On the contrary, Zembe said that on Monday, Usher called him on his mobile phone, asking him about his relationship with Sandra.
Zembe said he then promised to visit Usher at his house in Waterfalls as he was suffering from a fever on that day (Monday). “I told him that I was coming to his house as soon as I recovered from the fever. But it seems as if he failed to understand where I was coming from.
“I explained to him that I was not in a relationship with his wife. But he could not buy my story,” he said. Zembe, who described himself as a “clean man” and a “straight character”, said he explained his position to his family, as he had nothing to hide.
“My family understood my position, as I made it clear to them as to what had happened. I have nothing to hide. “My God is going to fight for me,” said Zembe. Zembe, who was attacked with iron bars, a wheel spanner and fists, was by yesterday yet to make a police report.
“I have not yet reported the case to the police. I think it’s something I have to do,” said the distressed Zembe. How did Zembe and Sandra Ndoro meet? According to Sandra’s husband, Usher, the two met through Noel Zembe’s backing vocalist Tinotenda.
They have known each other from the Apostolic Faith Mission where Tinotenda and Sandra are believed to be church members. “Zembe’s backing vocalist engineered the affair. I first suspected the two when she joined his (Zembe) band. She was always talking of rehearsals until I saw the text message,” said Usher. But Zembe has his own tale to tell.
He said he met Sandra through his backing vocalist Tinotenda. “I met Sandra sometime last year after she was introduced to me by Tino. That was after one of my backing vocalist-cum-cousin Nyaradzo Masangomai had left the country for the United States.
“We went to perform at a wedding and that is when I asked the band members to scout for another backing vocalist. “Tino then told me that she knew of one from her neighbourhood in Waterfalls who could fill the gap,” said Zembe.
He said it was when Tino brought Sandra to the band. “She has been with us since late last year and sometimes Usher would come along with Sandra for rehearsals. Even when we performed at the Family Gospel Show (that featured Lundi and Uche) she was part of the band that rehearsed for the show,” he said.
He said the deal soured when he asked Usher to grant him permission to co-opt her into the band. “That was when he started suspecting that I was having an affair with his wife,” he said.
