President Jacob Zuma’s brother, Michael Zuma, has pleaded with the media to avoid tearing the family apart through unfounded rumours over Zuma’s wives.

Reacting to reports of tensions between Nompumelelo (MaNtuli) Zuma and the recently wedded Tobeka Madiba-Zuma, the president’s brother said: “As far as we know there are no tensions within the family, whether among wives or children, and it is not fair to create divisions where none exist.”

While acknowledging the high profile of his brother, Zuma cautioned against media intrusion into family matters.

Media reports said MaNtuli, who was not seen during Monday’s traditional wedding, had snubbed the event as a result of “an ongoing rivalry” between the two younger Mrs Zumas.

Meanwhile, in an unprecedented move on Wednesday, the Presidency decided to clarify the status and the number of President Zuma’s wives.

The Zuma administration initially tried to brush aside media inquiries into how Zuma’s many wives would affect state protocol, for example who would be viewed as the first lady. But on Wednesday the Presidency said there was no official post of first lady and the president might decide to be accompanied by any or all of his wives to official or public engagements.
